This is a new cold war, and NATO overstepped the line, influencing Ukraine to join NATO. The East had a big loss in the Middle Eastern front when Lybia, Iraq, and Syria fell, as well as Israel gaining more power. They've taken too many losses of influence in East Asia as well, so losing ground in Europe would be a huge loss (considering 3/4ths of Europe is NATO controlled). The rest of the Western strategy is propaganda and justification for proxy wars, because the East is big bad barbarians (projection, both East and West initiate proxy wars, but the West is better at justification and making themselves look like heros, really only in the west, though).
