Hoi, Zaryans, it's me, Zaryan! I'd like to tell you guys I've been working in my free time from college on an Ongezellig adaptation, NOT a fiktie, and I will publish it here once I make some final proofreading, a promotional artwork, and it's cover. It's totally OC, I've been working on it nonstop, and it's been driving me insane ofzo
<leddit 'ace
Here's from my preface for it:
>This work—novelette, fanfic, chamber-piece, literary adaptation of an online web series—whatever it is of zoiets. It doesn’t fit in any of them because that’s the spirit of what I’m adapting from.
I had two premises in mind when it came to an Ongezellig adaptation:
1. What if the Bottle Smack in the Pilot had consequences?
2. How do I make a story out of it?
<'igle 'ogle 'ace
Let me know if you have questions about what it is. I will answer them honestly without spoling much o algugu

And when does it occur on the timeline (you could add dates)?

Anyways thanks for the info sound really zemmy, I can't wait to read.
<peeb spaceAnd side note what is Yfke and Koos doing during the novellette, off screen, this question is completely SNCA but I'm just wondering.

the issue isnt the quality of the writing, but who it's about. people read fanfic to look more into their favorite characters, in this case being the sisters. yeah vera is liked, but she's not exactly the character that people are dying to see.
not saying you have to scrap it, but if you want to start anew, writing about the sisters is probably your best bet
>all for nothingit clearly isn't, because even if it wasn't what you wanted it to be, you ended up learning a very valuable lesson of not biting off more than you can chew (which is a lesson you can only learn by doing exactly that)

No.135934
>>135933i personally think her interactions with the sisters would the the most interesting
No.135937
It's a Vera-centric novel. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to pigeonhole the sisters on the side to match a story that revolves around her.
Still, I had to concede by adding Maya and Coco in a flashback (my beta reader was, quote, 'soyjacking' when he finally got to that part that I can only interpret as fan service, and Mymy at the appendix to at least attach the sisters organically). But I chose to write a story that specifically has the disguise of a fanfiction when it's a YA/A novel in essence. The register is nothing you'd find on AO3, and I've already read a lot of dogshit Zellig fics there. writerfail (and maybe pnegpng) are the only AO3 fanfic authors who can actually meet your expectations, but what I'm doing is an entirely different thing. An actual novel, breaking 70k words, carrying the continuation genre centred on the peripheral teacher character. Yes, it hurts that nobody would read it probably, but if it catches a niche, well, that's how Massa got to us, didn't he? A friend (not a beta reader, but he's reading my current manuscript) told me that my book reads as if Massa himself continued the series via writing, and that means a lot to me.
<revengespaceI can't just release the entire thing now, because I overlooked one key worldbuilding factor in my manuscript and I'm back to the drawing board, but this story is what I believe one worth telling, and if my beta reader says exploring moral greys via Ongezellig fan literature is something worth considering, then perhaps I shouldn't just throw it all away.
>>135932This story is exactly what I want it to be. It just fucking sucks this fandom has been infiltrated by tweens younger than my time playing fucking Dota (I've played it since 2008) so I'm clearly not writing for them. The real question is, am I also writing for >>(You)?
>>135933Exactly. Actually, in my novel she's 48, way older and makes way more sense. The sisters going their own way is implicit but I focused on the other classmates (besides Rens, Sjef and Yfke in particular based on whatever information I have on them), so writing about Vera as an adult instead of the sisters as adult was my priority. Not saying that I'm incapable of writing the sisters as adults, since Maya would be as old as I am if the pilot took place in 2019 for example, but I chose not to do it. Yet.

>>135958I see. The 26k-word AO3 version is already a material about the delay of the word of the allegation being uttered. But right now, as my novel breaks 76k words, you're gonna see more people, more things, more worldbuilding. The prose you speak of, that which competes against the narrative, is a stylistic choice of mine, yes, and definitely still exists in my current workload. But put it this way: the prose, in my AO3 version, doesn't have to have momentum, advance the narrative. Instead, see the prose as characterisation. If my AO3 version is already ornate, the full novel will be thrice as much. It's not always meant to tell you where the story is going as much as it is quite often telling you what it is about, who it is about. If you want, my email is up above, and I'll send you a copy of my current manuscript.

>>135961yeah it’s just opposite to my view on the purpose of prose. in my eyes the point of a work is the narrative and that should be the focus. the elements should reinforce the narrative and the characters. when my prose works against my narrative i change the prose. i think an author can still write about what it’s about and who it’s about without becoming style heavy. you’re talented i just disagree with the aspect you are choosing to emphasize and making it intentionally obscure. i’ll read it when it comes out and i’m sure it will be high quality but you don’t need to send me anything early because i unfortunately guarantee the only thing i’ll have to say is that the prose should stop competing with narrative clarity.

>>135963To me, a work is not just the narrative. Narratives compel people to feel things about them, in your cas you find my prose obscure, perhaps difficult, perhaps wanting. Transparent prose is amazing! I've read Chekhov's short stories as an example of simple stories that are enhanced thoroughly by their content. It's fine if you disagree with my philosophy, otherwise it wouldn't be my work. Simple stories still work, but I chose a simple plot told in depth instead. Narrative clarity is one thing, and that is your emphasis. It isn't my priority, and, like my book says at one point,
>That which is received is received according to the mode of the reveiver. It's fine that you disagree. I think that's the point.
