This is official massa art. Does it imply maya cannonically doesn't have black hair?
It means Maya’s hair is black from weeks of grease and oil built up in her hair, in other words, she does not shower.

Think about it, Maya has no friends because she reeks. Her sisters just tolerate Maya's stench and are, somewhat, used to it. But their peers at school, they avoid her. There is a reason no one sits next to Maya. The smell would be unbearble.
