Yes, Coco’s parents WERE killed by Africans, actually.
Firstly I would like to address the ‘but Massa said’ argument- It feels very blatantly obvious to me that ‘they were struck by lightning’ is no more than a placeholder for something that would have been explored further had the show not been cancelled. This is because first of all it’s on the same tier of ridiculous as ‘They were suddenly crushed by a falling grand piano’- and I would argue that a sudden, painless death would not quite be as traumatic as it is otherwise presented. It is also worth mentioning that this was the second placeholder after the car crash, and it would be very bizarre for him to swap one sudden meaningless death for another sudden meaningless death, unless both were just different placeholders. Therefore using this as the definitive, ultimate answer is just liberal cope.
My second argument is the surrounding context from the show. Coco is a South African, who comes from a family of farmers. There is only one blatantly obvious reason therefore as to why Coco might have been an orphan. Someone may make the argument that perhaps Massa is some kind of liberal, who only realised that this might be a controversial subject after he’d already planned everything else, and thus was backed into a corner- BUT- this is obviously not the case. Massa is clearly very knowledgeable in history and geopolitics, and absolutely would have realised where that was going- and besides, the chance of him randomly stumbling into something like that, despite him having clearly done his homework on South Africa beforehand and being willing to handle dark topics elsewhere feels minimal. Coco’s backstory is the right wing equivalent of somebody writing a story in which there was a jewish orphan from Germany in the 1930s whose parents ‘mysteriously’ died before they left.
In short, it’s glaringly obvious that Coco’s parents were killed by Africans, given the surrounding context of the show, and that ‘struck by lightning’ was an obvious placeholder, just to give some explanation which could have been changed so that a dark topic could have been further explored in a future we didn’t get to see.

Plaasaanvalle is the only plausible explanation. It doesn't just give a proper cause of Coco being an orphan, but also recontextualizes her beliefs and actions throughout the story. She comes from a idyllic life abruptly ruined by a horrific event, and she's been holding onto that trauma deep down, not wanting to ruin the only good thing she has right now in her life.

>not wanting to ruin the only good thing she has right now in her life.
she actually has plenty of good things in her life (lots of friends/connections, playing pro league sports etc.) coco's the type to always fall forwards and upwards.
the reason she didn't throw maya out the window is not because she didn't want to go through the trauma of losing family again but to not lose her social standing, which is a valid reason but a lot more self serving

>Massa's homework on South Africa
I remember his animation on its history in nutshell and it was about dutch colonists building up culture there and then getting murdered by black newcomers. Lol he definitely knew what he did when he was making up the backstory of Coco.

How did this thread derail from Coco's parents' fate to computers being stolen

This alongside Mymy running away at 6 instead of being abandoned by her mother and resenting her heritage over that. Both are retarded pieces of "lore".

Mymy can still resent her heritage without being surrendered/abandoned. Her parents could have been drug addicts or abusive or gamblers or just neglectful in general so she ran away from it. She could still resent them and Japan for forcing her to run away. And if computers can fly up through ceilings and paper balls can be thrown around the frame I don’t see why she couldn’t succeed in the escape, they aren’t bound by reality exactly. If she was abandoned Eiko’s search makes way less sense.

Well liggers Mymy escaping Japan at the age of 6 is not literally canon it's just what Massa only considered about the lore. That was not a final stroke on Mymy's character.

>Don't care cracka kill da bo-AAAAAAACKKKKKKKKK!!!!
Also it makes no sense that Coco would move to the Netherlands if the death really was just an accident
Everyoje knows it was le plaasanvaal but then in march 2024 Massa decided to change the lore WHICH IS ILLEGITIMATE as he had already cancelled the shkw in february. Therefore the older lore (+fanon) is preferable.
