It's a trade-off, at over 2000 threads the catalog became unwieldy and took forever to load, so now it's divided into pages 100 threads each, ordered chronologically. Yes, the ability to sort all threads have been sacrificed, because the ordering is done client-side using threads that are present on the page, but it's only an interim solution. I think that ultimately the catalog should be built using catalog.json, similarly to how the ban list page is built.
BTW, you've just become a target of what is called a scream test.
