Im a senior in high school currently (just turned 18) and decided why not, work with the sped kids. I talked to the counselor because I would get some volunteer hours, also it seemed kind of interesting because they would always wave at me and I'd wave back.
I went today and talked to the teacher, and they were selling flowers out in the courtyard. she told me that these were the higher functioning ones (the ones who would wave at me were the low functioning ones, like with down syndrome and retarded levels of autism)
so I went in and most of them were nice to me. they were kind of confused at first but then they all introduced themselves. there was one boy with a gravity falls hat, and I talked to him about it.
there were 4 boys, no girls for some reason. one was pretty quiet but the other three talked to me. one was a spic and he seemed really normal actually he just didn't know when to stop talking.
at one point, two of them were talking to me at the exact same time and I had to reply and be engaged in both conversations.
I wanted to work in this field because I often feel odd about my interests (I'm obsessed with a fictional dutch awkward girl loser) so I do feel kind of empathetic for these kids
they reminded me a lot of my ex boyfriend, who I actually met in a therapy place. he had the same weird traits, like talking about only shit he cares about, and just being retarded.
I hope these guys don't develop a crush on me
