What caused India to turn into such a shithole? Was it just Indian historical revisionism that paints a glowing image of the past, or British Orientalism? If I remember correctly, Europeans were awed by India's cities when they first visited for the trade of spices(Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer comes to mind). India has (or had) some pretty interesting culture, although lots of it wouldn't be possible without the Indo-European invasions/migrations (1800-1500 BC). I just want to know what led India (if it was ever nice) down this polluted, shithole state it's in? Was it just poor government planning? (The woman is Rakhee Gulzar, an Indian actress). I'm not trying to shill, but just curious about how such a country could fall so far.

Indians have always been like this, but historically disease and famine wiped out most of the population each generation so they were never able to spread and fester. The ruling elite (which itself grew degenerate over time due to the caste system) was able to more or less keep the worst impulses of the masses in check. Then Britain brought medicine and hygiene, and (((Fritz Haber))) brought fertilizer, and the scales were overturned.
