Most people can't recognize patterns and find comfort in what they already know (work, familiar shared views and values, trusting the science). The men who died in WW2 probably had no idea what the implications or the causes of the war were, most were young boys right off of school or from some backwater rural area, in their mind they were fighting for their country and European brothers
