i feel that the feeling of it being disheartening might come from how heavily you related to Maya and how much you sympathized with her BEFORE you read the comic. I was the same, attaching myself to her and feeling what she felt as it was happening because I liked her, and I believed that it was truly disheartening and saddening. But overtime, as I became less attached emotionally attached, I re-read it and saw how flawed it really was.

Someone who wouldn't really relate to Maya isn't going to find it as disheartening, as the comic itself fails to make them care (and the only way it would've been able to do that is if it had more time and length to really show how fucked she is). It only hits if you cared in the first place, and if someone was more attached to someone like Coco or Mymy, they wouldn't find this story all that impactful.
