Waifu-culture is inherently 4chan-esque and it appeared from the scene with Kimura saying "waifu" in the original japanese version (also the eng dub had kept the original "waifu" so meme got even more popular), as we know Azumanga became a thing in 2002 and 4chan did in 2003, so there's no wonder how it all ended up like it is now.
