To draw a figure effectively, you'd have to be mindful of the distances between each section of the body and observe every segment as if it were in a 3D space (the latter is a bit hard so just focus on the former for now) A good exercise would be to pull up a person in some kind of normal pose and then trying to replicate the pose using a basic skeleton. You can start with "tracing" by directly pinpointing the different segments on the body and drawing the skeleton directly on the image, but at some point you'll have to move to copying without that.
