In the time of the VOC the lower-class and undesirable males would go to the indies as soldier or sailor. The pay was okay, 1/3 would die but anyone who survived had good opportunities to rank up and make a decent wage and also participate in trade or become a plantation owner after serving their time, and they got access to the brown women which they would convert to christianity and marry and have families with. Naturally there is always a surplus of males compared to females, either historically these men are killed off in war or sent abroad to colonize foreign lands and women.
