You literally paraphrased that you exist at the expense of the market of countries further north.

Of course YOU WILL deny your ancestors. But all these countries have broken free from the status of colonies of their metropolises. They're relatively poor, but your puny city-state would be crushed in the blink of an eye. But it's just not worth the effort. And your country? Just a trading city-state. Like Qatar or that ancient state.
