Western Roman Empire fell into constant war and degeneracy, it fell apart. The Byzantines survived tooth and nail for half if not most of their history, they fell apart too. Meanwhile the ravages of civilization the cumskins could get their hands on from Rome and centuries of education eventually led Britain to have the largest empire in history in terms of land mass and peoples conquered, the Dutch with their monopoly on trade, the Nords who engaged in a forgotten 2nd age of exploration around the turn of the century, and the French who owned swathes of Africa and at one point most of the US and a large portion of Canada. Western and Northern Europe, and North America had increasing quality of life in economy and technology while the Meds stayed poor and rural until American money entered their coffers after WW2.

As mediocre as the colonies of Spain and Portugal turned out at least they conquered a lot. Italy, Greece, Iran, Turkey, all of these brown neighbors to the white man had been irrelevant in these categories for centuries and by 1700s were languid, the colonies they owned were not grand nor tight in their hands. Their time just came and went. And Slavs did nothing except conquer each other and Turko-Mongolians.
