Instead of kids sitting at desks all day there is a lot of play time where imagination is encouraged, children aren't grouped by their age, and academic activities are more lax and let you go at your own pace. It's similar to Montessori school in its fundamentals though the complaint about Montessori is that kids turn out unwilling to compromise in general when they think they're right.
